Question about renting a car near Swiss border

Hi all,

I've been reading through your forums now for the last few days and I have to say there's a lot of nice information. I'm not very good in German, but google translate has helped.

I'm flying to Switzerland in mid-April and I was thinking of renting a car while there. The prices in Switzerland seem ridicilous and it came to my mind I could come to Germany for the rent. There seemed to be few places which are close enough for rent: Lörrach (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz) and Konstanz (Europcar and Hertz, Sixt here doesn't have any 5-series, only 3 series limo/estate). I had understood that the offices in these cities are a bit smaller, is it certain that I'll get an LDAR if I rent one and not get downgraded to a PDAR? I currently have a reservation for :203: at Lörrach, because I have gold level so I'll get some discount. Does anyone have any experiences on renting from Lörrach/Konstanz? Europcar Konstanz would be my next choice if Sixt Lörrach is not a good option, LDAR from Konstanz would be also my plan. I read somewhere in the forum that someone had got a downgrade in Lörrach. Is this usual for the smaller offices? Anyone experienced this?

Also, does anyone have the slightest idea about the fleet in Switzerland (Sixt for example?) At least the prices are at least double compared to Germany, PDMR was almost 500 euros; in this light renting a 250 euro LDAR in Germany sounds like a good idea though it will incur some travelling. LDAR was more than 500, 550 or so and if the cars are BMW 520d or wrose, (like in Finland they always are, I haven't seen a bigger engine than 520 here), I'm thinking for one wanting to experience the six cylinder, Germany would be better option? 8)

Does it cost something to go abroad with the car from Germany?

Welcome aboard ;-)

as you can see here some users already evaluated the service at Sixt Lörrach and it seems as if there's nothing to complain about, generally. If you have difficulties translating the comments, feel free to ask. Generally Sixt may upgrade you but must not downgrade you. However, given that there is no car in your class available, you may try to change at a bigger station (in Germany as well as in Switzerland) or get your invoice reduced. In case any problems occur which cannot be solved by the local staff just contact the support hotline.

When I book via sixt.de, there are no class restrictions at Lörrach. I can chose everything up to XDAR and XFAR (checked it on first april weekend). XSAR and XTAR are sold out.

The Gold-discount is quite small, maybe you should check if you have access to other rates (like Lufthansa Miles and More) or try car rental brokers.

As Switzerland is part of "Zone 1" regions (cf. Sixt Terms and Conditions) you may go there with your rental car without any further restriction. You should just bare in mind that cross border one way rentals may become quite expensive (just calculate whether it's cheaper to return the car in Lörrach or pay the more expensive one way fee and return it in wherever you are in switzerland)

@ohko:

Welcome to :206:

Please notice, that in LDAR/LWAR aren`t just six cylinder. The BMW 525 has just four cylinder and is in LDAR, too.

You should know that you need a vignette for Swiss highways. Not all german rentlal cars will have one. You man buy them for example at gas stations for 32€. Driving without vignette can become very extensive!

This I knew already from reading the forums. I need to remember buy this from a gas station / ask at Sixt.
I'll check these out, should give me some insight on the places!

That's also nice! I'll check it out too.. Although, as I said, I think it'll get too expensive to rent from Zürich with the taste I have :107:

Ouch, you got me there. :/ Luckily I did request for 530 or greater.. hope they take my request :)

I don't have anything else at my disposal, I'm happy with the discount I'm getting for the gold status. Hopefully soon I'll be able to get the platinum level. :P

Yea, I'm not planning to do a one way rental, I'll be returning the car to the place I rented it from.

I'll be then posting the car list from Lörrach on the forum, if you don't mind couple of words in English.

Big :60: again!

Yeah feel free to post in the "Tatort"-Thread once you're there!

Should you plan to rent cars more often in the future it might pay off to buy a credit card including a CDW, just fyi. Have a good time in switzerland and good luck with Sixt. We are always grateful for rental-reports, so if you find some time to take a few pictures and write some words on your rental-experience feel free to post it in the Erfahrungen mit Sixt-Thread. I suppose most of us will understand you even if your write in English ;-)

Hey ohko

at Sixt Lörrach the vehicle situation is good, and they look for your wishes. I never had problems with my P*** or L*** rent.

Europcar i've never tried.

But the problem is how you can reach Lörrach from the airport in Zürich. Take a train to Basel, then a german local train to Lörrach, it will take 2 hours and 2 different countrys, so also 2 different tickets.

To Konstanz you travel in ~1 hour, and a 5 minute walk to Europcar.

If you have further questions you can contact me.

Greetings Benj

By the way: if you drive on the swiss Autobahn without the Autobahnvignette, you will pay a penalty of 200 Swiss Francs and you have to buy the Vignette also.

And speeding is very expensive.

Check Singen and Konstanz first-they are the closest stations in Germany from ZRH. Depending on day/time of arrival you ll just have to catch a train there and get your car for a bargain price ;) Konstanz is usually better then Singen (experience of 5+ rentals each) in service and available cars. Good luck!

Yeah, I know that Konstanz is quite much closer, the problem with Konstanz is that there are no P*** or L*** there for Sixt :/ That's why I thought of reverting to Lörrach, tho it is a bit further away.

I haven't finalized the plans so thanks again for all the comments. :)

BTW, general question. If in Germany they have set a specific amount of kilometers for the rental, can it be increased at the counter still? Noticed that there was some discussion about 6 Gran Coupe in the bigger cities and that might be interesting option later, but the kilometer amount was quite small.

Yeah the trip is long-ish. I understood that I could buy the ticket straight away from sbb.ch, so that I wouldn't need to buy any ticket anymore for Germany separately. At least I remember from before you could buy a ticket from Switzerland to Germany too (used to live in Switzerland earlier).

True, Konstanz is a lot closer.

You could pay for an extra day (+300km) or pay the fee for additional kms (0,xx€/km). You just need to do maths. :)
