Umweltzone and renting a foreign car in Germany

Hello,

On three occasions when hiring cars in Germany, I have been offered a Netherlands-registered car, especially on one-way rentals where I am driving in the direction of the Netherlands. (Although driving only within Germany, and to a German return destination).
When this happens, I object and point out that the car will not have a Umweltplakette. The member of staff assures me that foreigners and foreign cars do not need this sticker.

I don't believe them and I don't see why I must help them to get their cars back to Netherlands when I am paying for the rental.

What do you think? Am I right?

Thank you

EUROwoman.

Thank you. It seems not acceptable then for any RSA to rent out a foreign-registered car unless it is at a very rural rental location away from the towns.

Large swathes of the Ruhrgebiet are Umweltzone, it is not just city centres!

I admit concerns that this is a commercial site, with the intention to sell environmental badges to foreigners. While it is true that foreign vehicles need an environmental badge, the ower, so Sixt, had to take the penalty in the amount of 80 EUR. The customer does not have to worry about it because he is not responsible if Sixt gives him cars without a environmental badge. But for sure the RSA was wrong.

Thank you for your answers. Am I to understand that there is an example on this website where a Sixt customer has driven a foreign car into an Umweltzone and incurred a fine? And is it merely a fine or can there be a point on the driver's licence (as suggested elsewhere)?

Does breaking the Umweltzone rule attract the attention of the police who might then decide to check other things (eg breathalyse the driver) or is more an administrative matter where a council worker would notice the lack of a sticker and report the driver?

And lastly, if you were offered a Netherlands-registered car, would you accept it or insist on a German one?

Thank you

No "points" anymore, only a fine ;)
I would insist on a car with german plates but - as I said - if you get caught by police or what else and have to pay for the missing environmental badge, you can forward the bill to Sixt, similar to when oil must be refilled. Just because you as the renter are not responsible for that.

In traffic noone gives a damn about the green sticker. I live in a city that has that regulation, never got stopped for a check.
Only occurs in parking situations when parking on roads if they are checking at all. FIne induces no points any more. Never saw police really care about that, it's more something "Ordnungsamt" is checking.
Also depends on the city, some cities are high on it and looking for every penny they can get(Berlin), some less.

Even if You get a rental car without the Umweltplakette, You can buy one for about 5 € at a lot of gas stations and car dealers. All you need therefore is the registration certificate.
