The easiest thing for renting a car is, get a major credit card (VISA, MasterCard, AmercianExpress, etc.) from your bank.

Don't you have a normal eurocheque card? As far as i know those cards work, if there is an "maestro" symbol on it. Another possible option could be a small local car rental station. Maybe the accept cash payment!

Edit: EUROwoman was faster!

the question is, if the IT system of the rental company can be convinced to use your VISA Electron as a debit card.
most likely the system will think that it is a credit card, but cannot put a reserved amount on it and therefore denies payment.

VISA Electron is not used that much in Germany, therefore it is difficult to draw upon experience of others.

do you have a MAESTRO-Card as well? can you get if (for free) from you bank?
I have a Maestro card too. It is a debit card as well. I also have a prepaid MasterCard credit card. Can I use those?

I can for example put a certain amount of money on the card so they can "hold" that amount as a deposit. They will be enough funds on it... The thing is that they're not credit cards (where I can take credit). What I have on the account, I spend.

I can't get a major credit card because I am not employed, I am still a student. And no bank will issue me a classic credit card.

not the prepaid MasterCard, but the MAESTRO Card will work.
not the highest car categories, but a golf will be fine.

Sixt will deduct 1,5times your rental amount plus 70€ from your bank account
and will give it back to you couple of days afterwards

but there has to be enough money in your account!
the system will deduct the above mentioned calculation from you bank account directly.
if there is not enough money in the account, payment will be denied.

Of course, I understand that. I will make sure I put enough money on it before I leave for Germany.

Tell me, is that rule "Bis FDMR mit Maestro - Kaution: 1,5x Mietpreis + 70€" valid for all Sixt places? Is that written on their website?

Oops, seems that Sixt changed conditions:

I'd try it, anyway. I don't think the rental agents know the difference. Technically it works. Besides, I successfully papayed with a Maestro card once.

I have only a comdirect (name of my bank) VISA "debit card" - as the bank told me - and this card is accepted by Hertz. I'd never had any troubles with it. Any debits are made within 6 up to 10 days after payment - with Hertz: not before returning the car. So I guess for the common cc-devices the "debit card" seems to be a regular credit card.

I do have a new zealand VISA card that says "debit card" on it (my comdirect VISA card doesn't) - but I haven't tried to use it yet.
So in my opinion: as long as "debit card" isn't explicit written on it to show "the function" for the rental agent - the rental stations would accept it as long as the cc-device doesn't makes troubles. So I finally guess the function "debit card" could be kind of interpretation within bank-contracts with their cc-providers, but that depends on your bank.

what you can try is to type in your cc-details when using a web-checkin. I used it sometimes and so I wasn't asked for the cc at the rental station.

So I can't use the Maestro card after all?

My prepaid MasterCard looks like a normal credit card, it doesn't have prepaid or debit written on it anywhere. Maybe try to use that? They can't find out that it's prepaid, right? If there is enough funds on it... It looks like this: http://www.prepaidcardaffiliate.com/images/cashplus.gif

Lets say that your total bill for the rent will be 200€. Just to be save I would make sure that there is at least 1000€ in the account.

The last thing you want is to arrive in Frankfurt and then not being able to rent a car. So I'd rather put 1000€ into the account than 600€ or 800€.

It is obviously down to your budget, but if you want a nice car rent CPMR - you 'should' get an Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series. Quite nice cars for what you pay for.

Have a good time in Germany.

PS: I wouldn't book navigation as most cars in CPMR (Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series) or FDMR (Audi A4, Merc C-Class, BMW 3 Series) have Satellite navigation as standard. Like I said - most cars, there is still a chance for you to get a car without sat nav.

That's valid for all stations. But I'd try o pick the car up somewhere else. FRA and Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof bill you a premium location fee. That would be 20% of your rental amount. You better chose some other station in the city.

if there is enough credit on the prepaid card... it should work, yes.
I guess when the rental station try's to authorize the payment, the provider (MasterCard) is asked for enough credit and confirms it - when there is enough credit.

btw. I have no experience with other rental stations then Hertz and Enterprise.
