International Driver License

  • Hi,

I rented a car for the first time in Germany. The reservation starts in 3 days. The Sixt office contacted me to bring my national driver license, passport and an internatinal driver license. I have an US driver license and my father has a Turkish driver license. We'll both drive. What even is international driver license? I booked cars both in EU and US but never got asked to bring an international driver license. I asked my friends who rented a car in Germany before and they all said they only brought their Turkish driver license and that's it.

    Is international driver license required?

  • It's an "translation" of your driver's license.

Don't know if it's required in Germany and where to get it. Normally in the country of origin.

When I would travel to Thailand for example I would probably get one. But it's less and less common.

  • For tourists who just will stay in Germany for a short period of time this should work (especially for the US driver license).

Also people who move to Germany are allowed to drive for up to 6 months with their drivers license from another country.

international driver lincense: translation of your own driver license - recognized in a lot of countries. Will be issued in the country that issued your dirvers license, so you cannot get it done for your US license in Germany (as far as i know). Valid for a few years only.

  • in the States as a German Driver you need the International drivers license. But I never had one. And nobody ever asks for it. Not the police. No car rental...
